Legacy Planning

A tool to help you intentionally consider the mark you want to leave behind.

The legacy of your community action is not about achievements but the mindsets, behaviours and practises that will remain as a result of your project. It’s created in every decision, interaction and conversation. Legacy planning sets the ground so that others can continue working when you’re not or no longer there.

Group Size: 1 or up to 12 (individual or group activity)

Time frame: 10-60 mins

Materials: Pen, notepad, a cup of something delicious to drink

  • Get comfortable somewhere quiet.

Get your Legacy questions ready (below).

It can be good to use old fashioned pen and paper - free yourself from distractions of computers, phones, or tablets.

  • Think about your community work and what you are up to. Then turn your mind to the future and imagine you are there…

  • Consider each of these questions in turn:

    • How did you leave your community?

      • what’s one meaningful change that happened because of you?

      • What’s different today that wouldn’t exist without your project?

    • How did you help others to grow?

      • What limits or fears did people overcome because of you?

      • How did you stretch people beyond their comfort zones?

    • What ways of working or thinking will continue?

      • What behaviour or mindsets became second nature because of you?

      • What’s the habit, phrase or belief your community / group will carry forward?

    • What will people say when you leave?

      • What’s the first thing people will say about you?

      • What will people miss about you?

  • Think about what you can do, and what your group could do  - the action to take in relation to how you work together and with others in your community - to leave this legacy for your community. Decide or agree your next steps for creating legacy.
